EU Council

EU Council

The Council is the main decision-making body of the European Union.
The ministers of the member states meet within the Council of the European Union. Depending on the issue on the agenda, each country will be represented by the minister responsible for that subject (foreign affairs, finance, social affairs, transport, agriculture, etc.).
The presidency of the Council is held for six months by each member state on a rotational basis.

The Council is responsible for decision-making and co-ordination.

The Council of the European Union passes laws, usually legislating jointly with the European Parliament.
The Council co-ordinates the broad economic policies of the member states.
The Council defines and implements the EU’s common foreign and security policy, based on guidelines set by the European Council.
The Council concludes, on behalf of the Community and the Union, international agreements between the EU and one or more states or international organisations.
The Council co-ordinates the actions of member states and adopts measures in the area of police and judicial co-operation in criminal matters.
The Council and the European Parliament constitute the budgetary authority that adopts the Community’s budget.

Welcome to the Home Page of the Transatlantic Legislators' Dialogue.
Intended primarily for the use of Members of the European Parliament and the United States Congress, the page provides links to documentation about the Dialogue itself and about legislation in one institution likely to be of interest to Members of the other institution.
The two components of the Dialogue hope that the public will bring to their attention aspects of legislation being considered that would impinge on trade or other relations between the United States and the European Union.

Legislative Observatory (information)

Legislative Observatory (information)

This administrative database has been developed in the context of the 'legislative backbone' set up at the Secretariat of the European Parliament in April 1993. It is produced and managed mainly by DG I (Presidency), with input from DG II (committees and delegations) and DG III (information). It is updated daily.
Conception of the database
Subjects of current interest
Legislative dossiers and research
Activities of the institutions
The database covers the activities of the institutions involved in the legislative procedure and the decision-making process. This tool should make it possible to follow and monitor the Community decision-making process and to evaluate and monitor the workload of Parliament and its committees, the Commission's annual working programme and the proposals of the different Council Presidencies.

How to interpret case citations

logosmallhttp://library.kent.ac.uk/library/info/subjectg/law/troubleshoot/citations.htm

How to interpret case citations
Case citations include the names of the parties and a reference to the law report in which it is published. A case may be published in several different reports, so you may get several different citations.

Since 2001 cases are also assigned neutral citations which give a unique identifier for each judgment but don't refer to any law report.
